Press Release

Victoria/Saanichton – May 20, 2025

Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association (VTRA) is thrilled to announce the unveiling of a ground-breaking tool designed to assist individuals with diverse abilities. On Thursday, May 22nd, VTRA will host a demonstration of its new MiraColt Horse-Riding Motion Simulator.  For the first time, the simulator will be paired with CanAssist’s Motivex software to create a more authentic and motivating experience for riders.

The MiraColt simulator will open up therapeutic riding to those who might otherwise be unable to ride a horse due to physical limitations or fear. By working with instructors and therapists on the simulator, participants can gradually build the muscle strength, flexibility, and confidence required to eventually transition to real horseback riding. The simulator also offers an opportunity for those on the waitlist to begin their therapeutic journey without delay.

Incorporating the Motivex software is what makes this simulator unique.  Using actual video of local horseback riding trails in the region, Motivex software will simulate real rides, making participants’ time on the MiraColt more immersive.

Empowering Through Collaboration

“We are so grateful that with the donation of this riding simulator, more people, with even more diverse abilities, will be able to access our programs,” says Liz Gagel, Executive Director of VTRA. “We’re also excited the MiraColt is portable, so we can take it to other facilities, such as seniors’ homes, to introduce more people to the benefits of therapeutic riding.”

This innovative effort is powered by the Vancouver Island community. The journey began with a generous donation from Lynda and Murray Farmer. CanAssist, a University of Victoria organization, helped bring this vision to life by integrating its Motivex software.
