Horses, like people, have personal space that we need to respect. Each horse has an invisible “bubble” around them that acts as their comfort zone. By staying mindful of these boundaries, we help the horse feel safe and secure. As you work with the horses at VTRA, pay attention to their body language to understand how big their bubble is. Approaching too quickly or entering their space without awareness can cause discomfort, while respecting these boundaries fosters trust and calm behavior.
Lucinda B., Certified Horse Speak® Practitioner, wrote a fantastic article called “Bubbles and Boundaries” that explains how horses experience space, how we can recognize their comfort zones, and why it’s important to respect them. Whether you're leading, sidewalking, or grooming, this is a great read to deepen your understanding of equine body language and safety.
Let’s keep learning together and continue creating a respectful, empowering space for our horses and participants!
