Step by Step: A Participant’s Journey at VTRA
This term, we had the joy of watching Saffy, a bright and expressive 4‑year‑old living with Down Syndrome, continue her Early Participant journey with her equine partner Trigger. Although illness prevented her from joining us for a couple of lessons, her growth over the term has been remarkable and we are thrilled that she is already registered to return for Term 4 in April.
Saffy originally joined VTRA through our Early Intervention Program in partnership with the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children. After a successful introductory term with her physiotherapist, Kim, she transitioned into our Early Participant lessons, where she has continued to blossom in both confidence and skill.
Developing Core Strength & Body Awareness
In the saddle, Saffy worked hard on:
Sitting tall and steady, engaging her core and maintaining balance
Looking ahead, a foundational skill for eventual steering
Feeling and responding to Trigger’s movement, especially when going over poles
Beginning coordination exercises, such as touching her head, shoulders, back, and Trigger’s mane
These activities help develop not only physical strength and mobility, but also sequencing, listening, and body awareness, key components of early developmental progress.
Growing Socially – A Beautiful Friendship with Abby
One of the most heartwarming parts of Saffy’s journey has been her friendship with Abby, another young rider who joins her in the same lesson. Abby has supported, encouraged, and uplifted Saffy week after week, creating a gentle and nurturing peer connection. Watching their bond deepen has been a highlight for our volunteers and instructors alike. Their partnership reflects the best of what therapeutic riding can foster: confidence, community, and shared joy.
Thank you to Saffy, her family, her volunteers, and her wonderful equine partner Trigger for a bright and inspiring Term 3. We can’t wait to see what Term 4 brings!
